Well, it’s official: The Madonna Biopic is currently the biggest role a young actress could ask for. Sources tell Billboard that some auditions have been going on for months and are described as exhausting and comprehensive. The process sometimes involving 11 hour days features choreography sessions and readings & singing auditions with Madonna. Auditions read like the marquee of notable actresses currently on the rise. Euphoria stars Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie read for the part, as did Mayor of Kingstown's Emma Laird and Mothering Sunday's Odessa Young. Indie pop star Sky Ferreira has also been sought after. Florence Pugh, who is currently Madonna's top choice for the part and Ozark and Inventing Anna star Julia Garner are still in the running to take the part.
The film has yet to be greenlit, though Universal has agreed to distribute. It is not expected to be greenlit until its star has been cast and its script and budget have been finalized.
Sources say the film builds up to Madge’s iconic 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour (the “Vogue” one, with all the 19th century getups). Many are comparing the film and role to Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis film starring Austin Butler, another role sought after by notable figures in Hollywood.
