Last night, Kendrick Lamar shook Day N Vegas.
Closing out night one to a crowd of over 50,000 eagerly awaiting fans, the “Greatest Living Artist” delivered his post-pandemic homecoming set divided into five acts.
Grandiose in scale, Lamar was joined by 16 dancers dressed in maroon, ballerinas and a stampede of exuberant children to run through his legacy in sequence, performing classics from each one of his albums and an encore with cousin and frequent collaborator it-guy Baby Keem, who is from Las Vegas..
The 90-minute performance saw Kendrick celebrate the tenth anniversary of his label debut, Section.80 which he had not performed songs from in nearly a decade. He debuted “Chapter 10,” which he had never played in concert before, as well.
Publications noted his all-white desert outfit and that his hair, braided and now touching his shoulders has grown considerably since his last performance, Day N Vegas 2019.
“It has been 365 days, times two, since I’ve seen you,” he told them.
The act and solitude of writing was the major motif of the show. The sound of a pounding typewriter opened the concert before the reversed sample from “Money Trees” was brought in.
According to Consequence, after each chapter, house lights went out and Lamar would signal the next movement with a calm “excuse me” as if he were taking a moment to turn a page.
Reportedly, he didn’t say much aside from a few “left sides” and “right sides” and a call for peace to the world. Most importantly however, Kendrick left the enamoured crowd with a tease: “Vegas till next time. And when I say next time I mean very soon,” perhaps foreshadowing a tour in the not-too-distant future.
New Kendrick Lamar music is imminent. The rapper announced a new project, his last for longtime label Top Dawg Entertainment in August.
Anticipation was raised two weeks later after connected influencer posted a picture of registered licenses for song titles his record company had filed with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Lamar recently hired a new manager, Anthony Saleh who represents Nas.
