Social conscious icon slash Azealia Banks with a master’s degree, Noname (formerly Noname Hiding, formerly Noname Gypsy) took to her Instagram Story yesterday afternoon with a personal message stating that she has not been consistently making music for four years, expressing uncertainty that she will ever make music again, and seemingly reversing an announcement she made in February that her album Factory Baby would be released at some point this year.
most days i’m not sure if i’ll ever make music again. the last time i was consistently making songs was 4 years ago. it’s been so hard to find producers to link up with and who i genuinely connect with sonically. im truly grateful for the art i was able to release but that might be it from me. like it shouldn’t be this hard. no lie this shit actually makes me incredibly sad and i rarely leave the crib these days. i don’t want to keep lying and saying there’s an album on the way when there’s not I’m sorry I’ve lead y’all on. i wanted to believe things would change but they haven’t
A modest stream of singles featuring appearances from the Chicago rapper seemed to confirm Factory Baby’s 2021 release, leaving fans asking for a date. Last Summer on June 18 (the day before Juneteenth), Noname released the Madlib-produced “Song 33” which directly responds to J. Cole’s “Snow on tha Bluff,” a song Cole made about the response to the murder of George Floyd that many believe refers to Noname and her criticism of him. Noname has since apologized and promised to donate all proceeds to various mutual aid funds. In August, she appeared on a remix for Anderson Paak’s “Lockdown.”
She then shared “RAINFOREST” on February 26 this year, asking fans to share the song on Pandora since streaming income will be used to make Factory Baby. Since then, Noname has not released any new music.

In February, Noname claimed her political views including her new affinity for communism and pan-Africanism will be examined on her new album.

In May, Noname responded to a fan if she had planned on releasing new music, to which she responded with a confirmed “2021.”

Noname also runs the Noname Book Club, a Black-owned, Black-led worker cooperative striving to connect communities through radical books. The club runs 12 chapters throughout the States including distribution in a number of prisons. They secured their first physical location last March and launched the space as a headquarters in October.
On September 12, when a fan provocatively claimed the rapper forgot she makes music after posting about sending 611 books a month to registered prisons, she rebutted, “I haven’t forgotten.”
