R. Kelly’s old cell mate Brendan Hunt, the insurrectionist YouTuber who was convicted of one count of threatening to assault or murder a US official last April can now add an extracurricular to his skillset, cartoonist.
The Daily News who has been following the story since reporting in August that Hunt and R. Kelly spent two weeks as cellmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center, now reports that Hunt has drawn a pencil sketched comic of his time with Kelly and filed it to the Federal Court of Brooklyn as part of his request to be sentenced to time served.
In other words, he would like to use his time already spent in jail towards his impending sentence..
Hunt’s strip titled Prison Comics depicts their time briefly spent together behind bars for its first cells. The offputtingly satirical narrative paints a situation where an insulted R. Kelly establishes his Pied Piper reputation and rattles off a few hits only to be retorted by Hunt who stumps the singer when he asks if he’s heard of Megadeth, Slayer, and the lesser-known Dying Fetus.
“I’m the greatest R&B star in human history! How can you not know of R. Kelly?” Kelly boldly protrudes.
They laugh. They do aerobics and yoga while Kelly sings “I Believe I Can Fly.” At one point Kelly, who Hunt calls his “workout pal” says he feels vulnerable while doing downward-facing dog. Yikes.
It is unclear if Hunt authorized and filed the comic for legal purposes or as a publicity stunt.
The 37-year-old Queens-based creator was arrested after he posted videos to YouTube that featured him encouraging rioters to return to the Capitol and retrieve their guns on Inauguration Day. The court found him guilty after the video captured him also threatening to kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in an effort to prevent them from fulfilling their constitutional duties.
The New York Daily News also chillingly reported that Kelly has apparently been performing acapella in the prison halls to a hugely positive response from the prisoners.
Hunt’s legal representation claims that Kelly’s singing has been liberating and “[transforming] the hellish surroundings.”
As a person who has finished The Wire multiple times I ask, what is this Avon Barksdale the musical? Sounds like a revolt via a quiet storm.
Kelly was convicted of racketeering in September for alleged sexual exploitation of children, kidnapping, forced labour, and violations of the Mann Act. Sentencing is scheduled for May 4 and an additional trial on child pornography and obstruction of justice charges is scheduled for August 1.
