The trailer for Hulu’s Pam & Tommy with Lily James and Sebastian Stan is here and by god…does it ever look awesome.
To be released on February 2, 2022, the limited series was developed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg through their Point Grey Pictures and depicts the tumultuous aftermath of the unauthorized and widely seen sex tape made by Baywatch Star Playmate Pamela Anderson and Motley Crue drummer and walking herpe Tommy Lee.
The two had already become one of the most controversial celebrity couples of the 90s, marrying after meeting for the first time just 96 hours before. The stolen tape, recorded privately during the couple’s honeymoon in 1995, was considered the first major “Hollywood sex tape,” an institution that now breeds its own celebrities.
Anderson and Lee are not involved in the project.
Lily James, Sebastian Stan, and Seth Rogen shook up the media discourse after releasing photos of their transformations on May 7. Their casting was made official by Deadline in December.
James in particular received major attention for her shockingly faithful appearance to Pamela Anderson, perhaps one of the most desired women of the 90s.
Craig Gillespie who previously helmed similar subject matter in I, Tonya will direct.
Seth Rogen plays ex-porn star mastermind Rand Gauthier, who set off the events in focus after stealing the couple’s sex tape at their home while working as an electrician. Gauthier used his connections in pornography to distribute the tape, hoping to earn a fast buck and get vengeance on Lee, who allegedly pointed a shotgun at Gauthier and didn’t pay for his services.
Nick Offerman plays Milton Ingley, the porn producer who helped Gauthier sell the tape online in 1997. Actor Mike Seely has been cast as Hugh Hefner (please dear God click on that hyperlink).
The project originally intended for James Franco to play Lee, though most likely due to Rogen’s cutting of ties with the disgraced actor, he has long been replaced by Stan, most known for playing The Winter Soldier.
According to the original release from Deadline, the film follows the couple’s first meeting in 1995 all the way up to their battle in court with Internet Entertainment Group whose owner Seth Warshavsky profited when he and Vivid Entertainment sold online versions and physical copies of the tape.
It is not clear why Pam and Tommy signed away the copyright of their tape to Warshavsky. In 1997, they sued him in federal court for $740,000 each and after the company folded, Anderson and Lee received nothing beyond the initial copyright transfer.
The trailer released on Wednesday November 17, teases a 360-view of the story in the vein of a heist picture, that could possibly connect the beginning of internet pornography, the limitations of privacy, writer’s room responses, publicity in the 90s, and a newly vindicated side of Pamela Anderson’s perspective.
James is unbelievable in footage not only in appearance but in voice and movement.
